How to Buy a CRT for Retro Gaming (What to Test)

CRT displays are still the correct way to play a huge amount of vintage gaming content. Light guns, low-latency scanlines, and the specific look of pre-HD games all depend on the display technology. The catch is that CRTs are big, heavy, aging, and no one is manufacturing them anymore — so buying one in 2026 means finding a used unit that still has life in it. Knowing what to test before you carry a 100-pound television home is the difference between a great addition and a burial expense.

Consumer sets vs PVMs

The CRT market splits into two broad categories. Consumer sets are what most people had in their living rooms — Sonys, Panasonics, Toshibas, Magnavoxes, JVCs — usually 20 to 36 inches, with composite and sometimes S-Video or component inputs. They're cheap or free (people are still trying to get rid of them) and cover most retro gaming needs.

Professional Video Monitors (PVMs) and Broadcast Video Monitors (BVMs) are the studio-grade equivalents. Sony PVM-14L5, PVM-20L5, PVM-2530, and the BVM series are the sought-after models. They're smaller, sharper, accept RGB and component inputs natively, and cost significantly more. PVMs are the top of the CRT hierarchy for serious retro gaming setups.

What to test before buying

Power the set on. Cold. Watch the screen come up — you're looking for even brightness across the entire face, correct color balance, sharp focus, and correct geometry. Bring a source you know (a composite-out game console with a familiar test pattern or a distinctive image) so you have a reference for what "correct" looks like.

Check the corners. CRTs age from the outside in — the corners are usually where geometry problems (pincushion, keystoning, tilt) and convergence issues (red, green, and blue not lining up) show first. A slight color fringe in one corner is normal on an older set; heavy fringing across a large area is expensive to fix.

Look for burn-in. A dim outline of a stationary image (a news channel logo, a broadcast bug) baked into the phosphor is permanent and reduces the set's usable area. Bring up a solid white or gray screen and look for ghosts.

Input types matter

What you can plug into a CRT determines what generation of gaming it's actually useful for. Composite (yellow RCA) is the baseline — every set has it, but the image quality is soft. S-Video is a step up and cleaner for the 5th generation era (N64, PS1, Saturn). Component (three RCAs: red, green, blue) is required for the sharpest HD-era output through the 6th and 7th generations.

RGB SCART is common on European sets and rare on North American consumer sets — but PVMs and Japanese sets often have RGB inputs directly. RGB is the sharpest possible output from most retro consoles and is why serious retro setups target RGB-capable displays.

The RGB mod option

Many consumer CRTs can be modded to accept RGB input by tapping into the chassis and running RGB signals directly to the CRT's neck. This is a specialty modification, not something most owners attempt themselves, but a working RGB-modded consumer set gets close to PVM sharpness at a fraction of PVM cost. Size, weight, and getting it home

A 27-inch consumer CRT weighs around 100 pounds. A 32-inch is 150+. Measure your setup space before you buy. CRTs are deep — a 32-inch consumer set is 20+ inches deep and needs a stand that can hold the weight. A wobbling AV cart is not enough.

Age, life left, and worth-it math

CRTs from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s are the sweet spot for retro gaming. They have modern inputs, mature electronics, and are recent enough that many still have significant life left. Sets from the 1980s and early 1990s are increasingly aged and more likely to have failing capacitors, dimming phosphors, and geometry that can't be adjusted back into spec.

Consumer sets are usually cheap enough that a functional 25-to-32-inch trinitron for the $ tier is a good deal. PVMs are firmly in the $$ to $$$ range depending on model and condition, with the most desirable models pushing the top of that range.

Setup with modern retro consoles

Modern retro-tribute consoles (Analogue Super Nt, Analogue Mega Sg, Retro-Bit Super Retro-Cade, and many others) output HDMI natively. Getting HDMI onto a CRT requires either a HDMI-to-composite converter (image quality mediocre) or a HDMI-to-RGB converter with SCART output (image quality excellent, hardware more expensive).

Some enthusiasts skip this by keeping their retro-tribute consoles for HDMI displays and using original hardware for CRT displays. A CRT setup dedicated to original consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, Saturn, N64, GameCube, Dreamcast, PS2) covers the pre-HD gaming library without any conversion.

Line doublers and scan converters
